Autologous transplants are chosen for several reasons. Primarily, they allow patients to receive higher doses of chemotherapy and radiation than they could otherwise tolerate. This can be especially beneficial in cases where the cancer is aggressive or has relapsed. Additionally, using the patient’s own cells minimizes the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a potentially serious complication where the donated cells attack the recipient’s body.
