Interestingly, certain bacteria are being explored as potential treatments for cancer. Oncolytic bacteria, which are engineered or naturally occurring bacteria that selectively infect and kill cancer cells, are being studied in clinical trials. For example, a modified strain of Salmonella typhimurium has shown promise in targeting and destroying tumor cells while sparing healthy tissue. Additionally, bacteria can be used to deliver therapeutic agents directly to tumors, enhancing the efficacy of treatments like chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
