Adenoviruses can be genetically modified to specifically infect and replicate in cancer cells, a strategy known as oncolytic virus therapy. These modified viruses, often termed oncolytic adenoviruses, can destroy cancer cells through lysis, which is the breaking down of the cell membrane, causing cell death. Additionally, the infection can stimulate an immune response against the tumor.
