Cancer cells can travel through the bloodstream or lymphatic system from the primary tumor to the CNS. Common primary cancers that metastasize to the brain include lung cancer, breast cancer, melanoma, and renal cell carcinoma. Once in the CNS, these cells adapt to the new environment and proliferate.
