Once a cell becomes a renegade, it begins to divide uncontrollably, bypassing the normal checkpoints that regulate the cell cycle. This unchecked growth forms a mass of cells known as a tumor. If the tumor remains localized, it is termed benign. However, if cells from the tumor invade surrounding tissues and spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream or lymphatic system, the cancer becomes malignant.
