Cancer spreads to nearby tissues through a process called local invasion. Cancer cells often lose their normal adhesion properties, allowing them to break away from the original tumor. They secrete enzymes such as matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that degrade the surrounding tissue matrix. This degradation provides a pathway for the cancer cells to invade adjacent tissues.
