During plasmapheresis, blood is drawn from the patient and passed through a machine that separates the plasma from the blood cells. The remaining blood components are then mixed with a plasma substitute (such as saline or albumin) and returned to the patient’s body. This helps to remove unwanted substances from the plasma while retaining the beneficial components of the blood.
