Cancer can affect the meninges through primary or secondary mechanisms. Primary cancers of the meninges, such as meningiomas, originate in the meninges. Secondary involvement occurs when cancers from other parts of the body metastasize to the meninges, a condition known as leptomeningeal carcinomatosis.
