AFP is often used as a tumor marker to help diagnose and monitor certain types of cancer. High levels of AFP can be indicative of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is the most common type of primary liver cancer. Additionally, AFP levels can be elevated in germ cell tumors of the testes and ovaries.
