Alpha fetoprotein (AFP) is a glycoprotein produced primarily by the liver and yolk sac of a developing fetus. After birth, AFP levels decrease significantly and are typically very low in healthy adults. Elevated levels of AFP in adults can indicate certain types of cancer or other medical conditions.
