Chronic GERD has been linked to an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer, particularly a type known as adenocarcinoma. The persistent acid reflux can cause damage to the esophageal lining, leading to a condition called Barrett's esophagus. Barrett's esophagus is a risk factor for esophageal cancer since the normal esophageal cells are replaced with cells similar to those lining the intestine, which can become cancerous over time.
