During the procedure, the patient may be asked to lie on their side while the sigmoidoscope is gently inserted into the rectum and advanced through the sigmoid colon. The entire process typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Patients may experience mild discomfort, cramping, or pressure, but sedation is usually not required. Prior to the procedure, patients are often instructed to follow a special diet and use a bowel prep kit to ensure the colon is clean.
