A sentinel lymph node biopsy is a specialized procedure used to determine if cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. The sentinel lymph node is the first node to which cancer cells are likely to spread from the primary tumor. During the biopsy, a tracer material is injected near the tumor, and the first lymph node to absorb the tracer is identified and removed for examination. This procedure is less invasive and can help avoid unnecessary removal of multiple lymph nodes.
