Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by group A Streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes). It leads to a sore, scratchy throat and is most common in children, although it can affect people of all ages. Symptoms include a sudden sore throat, pain when swallowing, fever, red and swollen tonsils, and tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth.
