Many tumors exist in a hypoxic environment due to insufficient blood supply. Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) are transcription factors that become activated under low oxygen conditions. HIFs upregulate the expression of glycolytic enzymes and glucose transporters, thus promoting glycolysis even further. This adaptation helps cancer cells survive and grow in hypoxic conditions.
