dilation and curettage (d&c)

Why is D&C Performed?

D&C is often performed when a patient exhibits symptoms such as abnormal uterine bleeding, which can be a sign of uterine cancer. The procedure helps in obtaining a tissue sample from the endometrium for histopathological examination. This tissue sample can then be analyzed to detect abnormal cells, including cancerous and precancerous cells. In some cases, D&C may also be used to remove uterine polyps or to clear out remaining tissue after a miscarriage, which can help in reducing the risk of developing infections that may complicate a cancer diagnosis.
