Given its role in cancer progression and treatment resistance, targeting hypoxia presents a promising therapeutic opportunity. Strategies to overcome hypoxia include the use of hypoxia-activated prodrugs, which are designed to become active in low-oxygen conditions, specifically targeting hypoxic cancer cells. Additionally, inhibiting the HIF pathway, which is central to the hypoxic response, is being explored. Efforts are also underway to improve oxygen delivery to tumors to enhance the effectiveness of conventional therapies like radiation.
