Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus responsible for chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the nerve tissues and can reactivate later in life as shingles, causing a painful rash and possibly other complications.
