Proteins play an essential role in virtually all cellular processes, including those that regulate the cell cycle, apoptosis (programmed cell death), and DNA repair. When genes that code for these proteins are mutated, the resulting proteins can malfunction. For example, the protein produced by the HER2 gene is involved in cell growth and division. Overexpression of HER2 can lead to aggressive forms of breast cancer.
